Portraits of Young Adults
For me, street portraiture is about connection, about individuals on both sides of the camera being seen, heard, and understood. I made these portraits of young adults in and around New York’s Washington Square Park. I’m moved by how youth here explore their identities as they transition into adulthood during a tumultuous time in history, when it’s even tougher to figure out who they are and what they want to do with their lives. I look for people with something visually interesting (hair color, jewelry, tattoos, clothing) and an inner authenticity and vulnerability. The people I’m drawn to are telling their truth in the moment and I find great beauty in their self-expression. Many are students pursuing creative careers in fashion, film, music, or art. I often see people more than once and photograph them again, watching them change over time. My lens is a conduit for making connections and sharing time with fascinating individuals. The trust and rapport we develop is tremendously rewarding; it’s what keeps me searching for the next encounter.
