New York, NY June 12, 2025 — Street portraitist Amy Horowitz announces the release of her debut photography book, A Walk in the Park?, a vivid and intimate collection of 166 portraits documenting young adults navigating the thresholds of identity and adulthood in New York City. Shot over five years in Washington Square Park and the West Village, the book captures fleeting moments of self-expression, vulnerability, and human connection.
“As a photographer, I’m drawn to the stories behind the surface,” says Horowitz. “This work is about being seen and seeing others—about making time stand still in a moment of mutual understanding.”
With an eye sharpened by years of observation and a background in street portraiture, Horowitz focuses on a generation coming of age in a world shaped by uncertainty, activism, and creative ambition. Many of her subjects are students and artists—often from NYU, The New School, and Parsons—pursuing futures in fashion, film, music, and design. Others are transplants, travelers, or long-time locals drawn to the park’s history as a cultural crossroad.

“Amy’s work reflects curiosity and empathy for her subjects, often photographing them more than once when the opportunity presents itself.”— Bill Lacey, The Pictorial List
In addition to the photographs, the book includes handwritten reflections from the subjects—brief, often poignant confessions printed on the inside jacket:
Together, these images and words create a chorus of voices speaking to the paradoxes of youth—hopeful yet anxious, expressive yet uncertain. |
A Walk in the Park? also serves as an homage to Washington Square Park itself, a site with rich photographic history and cultural resonance. From André Kertész and Diane Arbus to the music of Buddy Holly and the shadows of Edward Hopper’s apartment across the street, the park has long drawn artists and outsiders. Now, through Horowitz’s lens, a new chapter unfolds—one in which a generation dares to be seen. Amy Horowitz is a freelance photographer based in New York City. She studied photography at The International Center for Photography. Her award-winning work has been exhibited domestically and internationally. Amy’s book, A Walk in the Park? portraits of young adults in and around Washington Square Park in New York City, will be launched Fall 2025.
